The United Opposition (UNO) today denied making any categorical statement that the so-called Oplan August Moon will happen in December, but said a change in leadership in the military and police within the year will be the best confirmation that such a plot exists.
Makati Mayor and UNO president Jejomar C. Binay said the claim of a general belonging to Class 78 that he will be the next PNP chief by December tends to lend credence to the reported self-coup plot, “but we did not make any categorical statement on a fixed date.”
“If this general becomes PNP chief, along with a change in the AFP leadership, before the terms of the incumbents expire, then that would be the best confirmation,” he said.
Oplan August Moon has been described as an attempt by member of Class 78 to wrest the leadership of the police and military as part of Mrs. Arroyo’s plan to stay in power beyond 2010. Mrs. Arroyo is an adopted member of Class 78.
Binay had warned that the next few months will be critical to the opposition as it prepares for the possible declaration of a state of emergency and even martial law if the bombings continue.
He also advised the US government against supporting any move by the Arroyo administration declare a state of emergency and even martial law, saying it would put the Obama administration “on the wrong side of history.”
Binay said the opposition is ready to defy the administration should it declare martial law, and added that protest actions in connection with the State of the Nation Address (SONA) will continue despite the heavy police and military presence in Metro Manila.
