HEALTH OF A PRESIDENT A MATTER OF PUBLIC INTEREST – BINAY

The health condition of a president is of public interest, Makati Mayor and United Opposition (UNO) president Jejomar C. Binay said.

“The law does not give a president the discretion to choose what information about his health condition should be disclosed to the public and which should be kept secret,” he said.

Binay was responding to a statement made by Malacanang that some details of Mrs. Arroyo’s health condition “should be kept private.” Malacanang also said what was revealed by Press Secretary Cerge Remonde last Friday were details that Mrs. Arroyo “felt were important.”

“The health of a president is very important to the nation. The public needs to be assured that a president’s decision is not affected or impaired by his medical condition,” Binay said.

“Malacanang is once again fumbling to control a situation that they themselves created,” he said.

“The real issue here is that Malacanang has again been caught lying to the people on a matter of serious concern,” he added.

Malacanang had said Mrs. Arroyo decided to have herself confined at Asian Hospital immediately upon her arrival from abroad “to set an example for public officials.” The Department of Health earlier lifted the self-quarantine requirement for those arriving from abroad, a policy it enforced to address the AH1N1 virus scare.

“Malacanang used a valid public health concern – the AH1N1 virus – to camouflage the real reason for Mrs. Arroyo’s decision to have herself confined at Asian Hospital ,” Binay said.

“And now that they have been found lying, they are trying to divert the issue by invoking her privacy,” he said.
