BINAY URGES CANDIDATES IN 2010 ELECTIONS TO
SIGN ANTI-SMEAR COVENANT
Makati Mayor and United Opposition (UNO) president Jejomar C. Binay today urged all aspiring candidates in the 2010 elections to sign and commit themselves to the Anti-Smear Covenant for Fair Elections in 2010 organized by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Binay issued the appeal after he signed the covenant presented during the media launch of the Politicalarena.com, the country’s first socio-political networking site developed to promote awareness and interactivity in the local political scene and its territories.
“I hope that all the aspiring candidates in the local and national levels will show their willingness to support the campaign for orderly and honest elections through signing this covenant,” Binay said.
The Anti-Smear covenant enjoins the country’s leaders to motivate the Filipino people to register and exercise their right to suffrage through the conduct of an educational campaign that will enable them to cast informed and responsible votes. Likewise, it seeks the commitment of candidates to protect the safety and security of the voters, volunteers and the rest of the Filipino people during the campaign period and beyond.
Candidates are also asked to pledge to conduct the campaign responsibly and truthfully, out of courtesy and respect to their fellow candidates and the Filipino people, and to uphold the credibility and integrity of the campaign period and election process and the dignity of the Filipino.
Binay is among the personalities who are shown in the Politicalarena.com. Designed and powered by a team of young designers and developers, the Politicalarena.com will serve as a common platform for all candidates to disseminate information to all voters, real time. It is also a one-stop shop to access information about all the candidates to make more informed decisions.
The group behind the said socio-political networking site aims to help in nation building by providing Filipinos here and abroad access to information that will shape their views in choosing the next leader of the country.
The media launch was attended by members of the media and representatives from Comelec and NAMFREL-PPCRV.
